NESCAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced
Middlebury's Cronin
Honored as Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. - Senior forward
Brittany Cronin of Middlebury College was honored by the conference
coaches as the 2004 NESCAC Player of the Year. Cronin tallied a
league-leading seven goals during conference play and helped the
Panthers post an unbeaten 13-0-3 mark as they advanced to the
finals of the NESCAC Championship and an earned a NCAA Division III
Women’s Soccer Championship berth.
Joining Cronin on the first team
are Middlebury seniors Mayo Fujii and Elisabeth Van Woert. Fujii,
as senior midfielder, added five goals as the Panthers scored a
conference high 17 goals during the regular season. Fujii and
Cronin were each credited with two game-winning goals as the
Panthers finished league play 7-0-2. Middlebury goalkeeper Van
Woert averaged almost eight saves per game and allowed just four
goals during nine conference contests to lead the league with a
0.42 goals against average.
Five players were repeat first-team
selections led by Connecticut College senior midfielder Christa
Thoeresz who was named to her fourth consecutive all-conference
first team. Thoeresz, who tallied two conference goals this season,
was named the NESCAC Player of the Year in 2002 and the conference
Rookie of the Year in 2001. Senior Bowdoin defender Kendall Cox was
honored on the all-conference first team for the third straight
season.
A trio of Williams seniors were
named to the first team. Hannah Stauffer earned her third
consecutive first team honor while forward Lindsay Dwyer made her
second first team appearance. Dwyer led the Ephs with five
conference goals. Stauffer and defender Afton Johnson directed a
Williams defense which gave up only five goals over their final
four regular season conference games and allowed just one goal on
their way to claiming the NESCAC Title.
The Amherst duo of Ashley Harmeling
and Tracy Montigny led a Jeff squad which scored 17 conference
goals and finished the regular season unbeaten at 6-0-3. Harmeling,
the NESCAC Player of the Year a season ago as a junior, recorded
four goals while Montigny led the conference with five league
assists.
Connecticut College freshman
defender Claire Linden was honored as 2004 NESCAC Rookie of the
Year. Linden’s Camels became the first team in the history of
the NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship to advance to the
semifinals as a seven seed after defeating Amherst 1-0 in the first
round.
Middlebury interim head coach Peter
Kim was named NESCAC Coach of the Year by his peers after leading
the Panthers to an unbeaten mark in conference (7-0-2) and the
NESCAC Championship game after finishing 5-4 in conference play a
season ago.
NESCAC all-conference selections
are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional
players honored are due to ties in the voting.
