2004 Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced
Bolton of Williams
Named Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Williams
junior Josh Bolton was honored as the 2004 NESCAC Player of the
Year by the conference coaches. Botlon anchored an Eph midfield
which posted a 12-2-2 mark and captured their fourth consecutive
NESCAC Championship. Bolton scored three goals and assisted on four
others during the 2004 campaign.
Bolton is joined on the first team
by senior goalkeeper Nick Armington and a pair of sophomores, Brett
Olsen and Dana Leary. Armington, a second-team selection a year
ago, led the conference in goals against average (0.64) allowing
just eight goals on the year and only four during conference play.
Olsen, a sophomore forward named 2003 Rookie of the Year, led
Williams with five assists while contributing five goals this
season. Leary added four goals from his defensive position and
anchored an Eph defense along with Armington that led the
conference and ranks nationally with a 0.52 goals against average
and posted 10 shutouts on the year.
Forwards Terence O’Connell
and Mike Wohl led the league in scoring on their way to a
first-team selection. O’Connell, a junior forward from Bates,
recorded 10 goals with four assists to lead the conference in
points with 24. Wohl, a sophomore from Amherst, matched
O’Connell’s ten goals on the year including a
league-leading six during conference play. Tufts sophomore forward
Ben Castellot, who tallied four goals for the Jumbos, was also a
first team honoree.
Bowdoin placed three members on the
all-conference first team. Senior defender Danny Sullivan and
junior forward Andrew Russo were the only two repeat first-team
selections. Russo led the Polar Bears with seven goals while
Sullivan, along with senior midfielder Ethan Roth, was the
foundation of a Bowdoin defense which ranked third in the
conference in goals against average (0.87). Roth contributed a goal
and four assists from his midfield position.
Senior John Rusten led the high
scoring Middlebury attack with nine goals and 21 points ranking
third in the league in both categories. Panther junior Derek Cece
added two goals and an assist as a defender and led a Middlebury
squad which posted eight shutouts and allowed only 14 goals.
Wesleyan seniors Rob Nerenz and Dan
Penrod anchored a defense which allowed just one goal per game.
Penrod recorded just over four saves per game in goal for the
Cardinals and with the help of Nerenz, a defender, recorded five
shutouts during the year.
Middlebury freshman David LaRocca
was named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. LaRocca scored eight goals
including five in the last two weeks of the season helping the
Panthers reach the NESCAC Championship game.
Bates head coach George Purgavie
was recognized by his peers as the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
Purgavie led the Bobcats to their best record in 37 years finishing
with five NESCAC victories and an overall mark of 10-4-1.
NESCAC all-conference selections
are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional
players honored are due to ties in the voting.
