NESCAC Field Hockey All-Conference Teams Announced
Mackey of Middlebury
Honored as 2004 Player of the Year
HADLEY, Mass. – Middlebury
junior defender Janie Mackey was chosen the 2004 NESCAC Field
Hockey Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches.
Mackey is the first defender chosen as Player of the Year since the
conference began awarding the honor in 1999. The junior led a
Middlebury defense which posted seven shutouts during the year and
allowed just 18 goals en route to an undefeated regular season and
15-1 overall mark. Mackey also contributed on offense scoring four
goals and assisting on three others.
Mackey is joined by Panther
teammates Channing Weymouth and Claire Edelen on the first team.
Weymouth, a junior midfielder, was a second team selection a year
ago. Edelen, a sophomore forward, is currently tied for the
conference lead in goals (13) and points (35).
Williams junior defender Emily
Grannon and senior forward Tara Boyd were also first team honorees.
Grannon, the 2002 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, made her second
straight all-conference first team after leading an Eph defense
which allowed just over one goal per game. Boyd, a second team
selection in 2003, led Williams in goals (10) and assists (5).
Colby senior forward Wendy Bonner
was selected to her third straight all-conference first team.
Bonner led the Mules in both goals (10) and assists (6).
The 2003 Player of the Year,
Bowdoin’s Marissa O’Neil was honored on the first team
for the second consecutive season. O’Neil, a senior forward
and the league’s leading scorer a year ago, finished with
eight goals and eight assists to lead Bowdoin in points. Joining
O’Neil on the first team are Bowdoin sophomores Taryn King
and Kate Leonard. King, who was named Rookie of the Year in 2003,
led the Polar Bears and finished second in the conference with 10
assists from her midfield position. Leonard, a sophomore
goalkeeper, led the league in goals against average (0.71),
shutouts (5) and allowed just seven goals in nine conference games
saving over ninety percent of the shots she faced in league play.
Jenn Wasserman of Wesleyan and Lea
Napolitano of Tufts round out the first team selections. Wasserman,
a senior forward, led the Cardinals with 13 goals this year.
Napolitano, a second team honoree last season, scored three
game-winning goals for the Jumbos this year from her midfield
position.
Williams head coach Alix Rorke was
honored by her peers as Coach of the Year after the Ephs finished
the year with a 14-3 overall record and defeated Middlebury in
overtime to claim their third NESCAC Championship.
First year players Jill Mauer of
Connecticut College and Jamie Enos of Colby College were named
co-Rookies of the Year. Mauer led the Camels with six goals from
her forward spot while Enos posted the league’s best save
percentage (.885) allowing just 11 goals in 10 games played.
NESCAC all-conference selections
are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional
players honored are due to ties in the voting.
