NESCAC Softball All-Conference Teams Announced

Drake of Tufts named 2003 Player of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. - Tufts University catcher Lis Drake was named the 2003 NESCAC Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches. Drake, a four-time first team all-conference selection and 2000 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, hit .388 with seven home runs and a league-leading 34 runs scored. From her catcher spot, Drake caught nine base runners stealing and picked off five more on base.

Joining Drake as first team selections are Tufts’ sophomore shortstop Courtney Bongiolatti and junior third baseman Julie Fox. Bongiolatti and Fox tied for the conference lead with 46 hits on the season leading the most potent offense in the NESCAC. Tufts coach Kris Herman was honored as NESCAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season after leading the Jumbos to the their third conference championship and seventh consecutive NCAA appearance.

Three first year players were selected to the all-conference first team including NESCAC Rookie of the Year Alana Frost of Williams and NESCAC Pitcher of the Year Lauren Olmsted. Frost was second in the conference in stolen bases and hit .370 for Williams College which won the NESCAC West Division. Colby’s Olmsted earned Pitcher of the Year honors after posting a 1.15 ERA, allowing just 13 earned runs in 79 innings. Amherst freshman pitcher Miya Warner was also a first team selection. Warner led the conference in strike outs (181) and opponents batting average (.207) while posting a 1.66 ERA in 164 innings.

Olmsted was joined on the first team by a pair of Colby sophomores Wendy Bonner and Annette Caswell. Caswell was second in the conference in batting (.443) while Bonner led Colby in nine offensive categories. The three underclassmen helped the Mules earn the NESCAC East Division top seed and reach the conference championship for the first time.

Williams senior Kristin Massimiano was honored for the second consecutive season on the all-conference first team. Massimiano committed only one error in 41 chances in the outfield while hitting .364 and leading the team with 40 hits and 28 runs scored.

Trinity senior shortstop Laura Heath and Middlebury junior Christina Freyer were honored as first-team selections a year after being named to the all-conference second team. Heath led the NESCAC in batting (.444) and stolen bases (15). Freyer was ranked among the conference leaders in 10 offensive categories including batting (.433), slugging percentage (.639) and on base percentage (.518). The junior centerfielder had just one error in 56 chances for the Panthers who advanced to the NESCAC Championship for the first time.

NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional players honored on the first or second team are due to ties in the voting.
