NESCAC Announces 2003 Men's Ice Hockey All-Conference Team

Middlebury’s Kevin Cooper Selected Player of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. – Middlebury junior forward Kevin Cooper was selected as the 2002-03 NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year by the conference coaches. Cooper, a two-time selection to the all-conference first team, is currently second in the NESCAC with 35 points and leads the league in goals scored with 21.

Cooper and the second-ranked Panthers (20-3-2) will attempt to win their fourth consecutive NESCAC Championship this weekend as they host the semifinals of the conference tournament. Middlebury will meet fifth seed Hamilton (14-9-2) in the first semifinal at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8. Tenth-ranked Colby (18-5-1) will meet eleventh-ranked Trinity (17-5-2) at 4:00 p.m. The winners of Saturday’s semifinals will meet for the NESCAC Championship on Sunday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.

Each of the four NESCAC semifinalists placed a member on the all-conference first team. Colby will be led by sophomore forward Nick Bayley. Bayley leads a Mules offense which is one of the most prolific in the nation averaging 5.12 goals per game. The sophomore finished first in the conference in points with 39 and second in assists with 22.

Senior defensemen Steve Aubuchon of Hamilton and Ryan Seymour of Bowdoin were honored as first team selections. Aubuchon led all NESCAC defensemen tallying 18 assists on the year. Seymour, a four-year starter for the Polar Bears, finished the year with 3 goals and 13 assists while leading a Bowdoin defense which was ranked 10th in the nation in penalty kill percentage (.868).

Amherst sophomore forward Beau Kretzman earned first-team honors a year after being selected the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Kretzman is ranked among the nation’s leaders with 19 goals on the year. He finished the year sixth in the conference with 33 points. Trinity goaltender Doug Kisielius rounds out the first-team all-conference selections. The sophomore was ranked in the top 20 nationally in both save percentage (.913) and goals against average (2.45).

Bowdoin’s Adam Dann and Hamilton’s Gabe Tash shared NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. Dann, a freshman forward, finished second on the team with 11 goals and 14 assists in his first collegiate season. Tash, a freshman goaltender at Hamilton, posted a. 918 save percentage, second best in the conference and 11th best in the nation. Trinity head coach John Dunham was chosen the NESCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year after leading the Bantams to a 15-3-1 league mark and the second-seed in the NESCAC Championship.
