NESCAC Women's Basketball All-Conference Selections Announced
Colby’s Sarah
Walsh Named Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. — Sarah Walsh
of Colby was named 2002-03 NESCAC Player of the Year by the
conference coaches. The senior center led the conference in scoring
and rebounding averaging 17.8 points and 11.6 rebounds as
Colby finished the year 18-7. Walsh, a second-team all conference
selection in 2001-02, was ranked in the top 10 of six conference
statistical categories this season including assists (3.20 apg),
steals (2.80 spg), blocked shots (0.96 bpg) and field goal
percentage (48.0%). She ended her career as the all-time leading
rebound (1,022) and steals (245) leader at Colby while finishing
second in career scoring (1,409). Walsh was the first Colby woman
to score 1,000 points and pull down 1,000 rebounds in a career.
Bowdoin teammates Kristi Royer and
Lora Trenkle were each honored on the all-conference first team.
Trenkle, the NESCAC 2000-01 Rookie of the Year and 2001-02 NESCAC
Player of the Year, finished fifth in the conference in scoring at
14.6 points per game. Her Polar Bears (24-2) secured their third
consecutive NESCAC Championship and are currently ranked eighth in
the country.
Royer is making her third
appearance on the all-conference first team. The senior forward
averaged 14.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Royer currently
ranks second on Bowdoin’s all-time scoring list with 1400
points entering NCAA play and stands as Bowdoin’s third most
prolific rebounder with 752 boards.
Bates’ Carla Flaherty was
named to the all-conference team for the second consecutive year.
The senior guard used her 17.6 points per game to push Bates (19-7)
into the conference tournament final against Bowdoin. Flaherty
ended her career fifth on Bates’ scoring list with 1143
career points.
Rounding out the first-team
honorees is Kate Stumpo of Williams. Stumpo, a second team
selection last season, averaged 12.3 points per game as the Ephs
finished 18-8, 6-3 in conference play. The senior guard became the
seventh player at Williams to score 1,000 points in a career.
Tufts’ Jessica Powers was
named NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Led by Powers’ 13.5 points
and 2.33 steals per game, the Jumbos finished the season 17-7,
posting the most wins by the program since the 1990-91 season.
Wesleyan head coach Kate Mullen was
honored as NESCAC Coach of the Year by her colleagues. Mullen
guided the Cardinals to a 21-4 overall record, 7-2 in conference
play marking a four-game improvement from last season’s 3-6
league record.
