Bowdoin's O'Neil Garners Player of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior forward Marissa O’Neil of Bowdoin College was chosen the 2003 NESCAC Field Hockey Player of the Year in a vote by the conference coaches. O’Neil, the 2001 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, led the conference in scoring with 19 goals and 17 assists for a total of 55 points.

Connecticut College senior forward Emily Huffman, the 2000 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and Bowdoin senior goalkeeper Gillian McDonald made their fourth consecutive appearances on the all-conference first team. Huffman, an All-American selection in 2001 and 2002, finished her career as all-time points leader at Connecticut College. McDonald allowed just 16 goals in 16 games and recorded five shutouts with an .811 save percentage.

O’Neil and McDonald were joined on the first team by Polar Bear teammate Amanda Burrage. Burrage, a senior midfielder and first team selection a year ago, contributed three goals and seven assists for a Bowdoin squad which led the league in scoring offense (4.14 goals per game) while allowing just 1.05 goals per game.

Williams senior Molly Jennings, last year’s NESCAC Player of the Year, was one of four Ephs named to the all-conference first team. Jennings, a senior midfielder and two-time All-American, helped Williams to a 13-4 mark and a berth in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship. The Ephs leading scorer senior Tori Scott, 16 goals and 11 assists, was honored on the first team for the third straight year. Williams senior midfielder Rebecca Kiselewich and sophomore defender Emily Grannon, the 2002 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, were also named to the all-conference first squad.

Middlebury senior Missy Krempa, who scored six goals from her defensive position, led a defense which allowed just 0.88 goals per game en route to the NESCAC Championship. The Panthers are currently 16-0 and ranked number one in the country entering the NCAA tournament.

Colby junior Wendy Bonner and Amherst senior Molly Jacobs round out the first team selections. Bonner, who led the Mules with 15 goals on the year, earned first-team recognition for the second consecutive season. Jacobs led the Jeffs with six defensive saves.

Bowdoin head coach Nicky Pearson was honored by her peers as Coach of the Year after the Polar Bears finished the year with a 13-3 overall record. Freshman midfielder Taryn King of Bowdoin was named the conference Rookie of the Year.

NESCAC all-conference selections are determined in a vote by the conference coaches. Additional players honored are due to ties in the voting.
