2002 Baseball All-Conference Teams Announced

Scialabba of Williams, Bayliss of Trinity Earn Top Honors

HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior designated hitter Mark Scialabba of Williams and junior pitcher Jonah Bayliss of Trinity were named the 2002 NESCAC Baseball Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

Scialabba led the conference with a .437 batting average, 13 home runs, and 55 runs batted in. He scored 38 runs and added nine doubles. Bayliss posted an 8-1 record with a 2.43 earned run average. He yielded just 36 hits in 66 and two-thirds innings and struck out 84 hitters.

Three players were repeat first-team All-NESCAC honorees. Senior outfielder Dan Callahan of Tufts, the 2001 NESCAC Player of the Year, was named to the first team after hitting .400 with 19 extra-base hits, including seven triples, 36 runs scored, and 33 RBI entering the NCAA tournament. Senior shortstop Andrew Freimuth of Trinity was named to the first team, hitting .311 with 32 runs scored and 29 runs batted in. Sophomore first baseman Jabe Bergeron of Williams, the 2001 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, earned first-team accolades for the second time in as many years after batting .421 with 11 home runs, 50 runs scored, and 48 RBI.

Two other players from conference champion Tufts joined Callahan in earning first-team recognition. Junior pitcher Dave Martin led NESCAC pitchers with a 0.85 earned run average, while junior outfielder Evan Zupancic hit .383 with 11 home runs, 43 runs scored, and 34 RBIs.

Senior outfielder Greg Spanos of Trinity was named to the all-conference first team after earning second-team honors a year ago. He hit .336 with 14 doubles and 34 runs scored. Junior second baseman Kurt Piantek of the Bantams was named to the first team after hitting .371 with a school-record 12 home runs, 38 runs scored, and 52 RBIs.

Sophomore infielders Kevin Bougie of Bowdoin and Matt Potter of Amherst received first-team recognition. Bougie batted .377 with team-highs of 29 runs scored and 27 RBIs. Potter hit .409 with 23 runs scored and 24 RBIs. Rounding out the first team was senior catcher Ben Donaldson of Bates, who hit .303.

Williams pitcher Chris Bodnar earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors. He posted a 6-2 record with 53 strikeouts in 58 innings. Wesleyan Head Coach Mark Woodworth earned NESCAC Coach of the Year honors for leading the Cardinals to first place in the West Division and a third-place finish in the conference tournament.
