Men's Basketball All-Conference Teams Released
Tabb of Trinity Named
Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior
guard Colin Tabb of Trinity was named the 2001-02 NESCAC
Men’s Basketball Player of the Year. Tabb, a repeat
first-team selection, averaged a conference-best 24.8 points per
game and added 7.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game
in the regular season. He led the NESCAC in free throw percentage
(86.8 percent) and helped the Bantams earn the top seed in the
NESCAC tournament and a berth in the NCAA Division III Championship
tournament.
Senior guard Leo Jones of Wesleyan
earned first-team honors for the third consecutive year. Jones
averaged 20.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per
game in the regular season and then led the Cardinals to the
semifinals of the conference tournament.
Junior forward Steve Zieja of
NESCAC champion Amherst was named to the first team after earning
second-team honors last season. He averaged 17.3 points and 7.2
rebounds per game in the regular season and scored 32 points in the
championship game of the conference tournament to give Amherst its
second NESCAC title in as many years and its third consecutive trip
to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Senior guard Mizan Ayers of
Connecticut College earned first-team honors and was named the
2001-02 NESCAC Men’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year.
Ayers averaged 14.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and a
conference-leading 2.3 steals per game.
Rounding out the first team was
senior guard Damien Strahorn of Colby. He averaged 22.9 points, 5.1
rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while hitting 82 three-pointers
and shooting 81.7 percent from the free throw line.
Craig Coupe of Tufts was named the
2001-02 NESCAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year. Coupe
averaged 11.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game. Lynn
Ramage of Connecticut was named the NESCAC Men’s Basketball
Coach of the Year after leading the Camels to a 6-3 conference
record and the third seed in the NESCAC tournament.
