NESCAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Teams Announced
Williams' Stephenson
Garners Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. – Williams
junior Khari Stephenson was named 2002 NESCAC Player of the Year.
Stephenson scored 12 goals on the year and ranked third in the
conference in points per game (1.76) leading Williams to their
second straight NESCAC Championship.
Stephenson is joined on the first
team by senior teammates Alex Blake and Dylan Smith. Blake, the
two-time NESCAC Player of the Year and 2001 National Player of the
Year, led the conference in points (55), goals (21) and assists
(13). Smith helped a Williams defense which allowed only 13 goals
in 17 outings.
Middlebury senior forward Kyle
Dezotell and junior defender Jason Griffiths were both honored on
the all-conference squad. Dezotell finished his career as the
Panthers all-time leading goal scorer with 34 scores.
The Trinity Bantams also placed two
on the all-conference first team. Senior forward Morgan Sandell
makes his third consecutive appearance on the all-NESCAC first
team. Sandell had 10 goals on the year and was second in the
conference in points (2.08). After being honored on the second team
as a freshman and first team in his sophomore season, Trinity
junior defender Phil Flakes was selected to his third all-NESCAC
squad in 2002.
Joining Stephenson as
all-conference honorees at the midfield position were Tufts junior
Brian Mikel and Connecticut College senior Peter Dee. Mikel, a
second-team selection in 2001, anchored play for the Jumbos who
finished 9-5-1. Dee, who led Connecticut College with five goals
this season, was also a first-team selection as a sophomore.
A pair of sophomores round out the
first team selections. Wesleyan forward Evan Berding of Wesleyan
scored 10 goals for the Cardinals. Connecticut College goalkeeper
Jon Knights earned honors after posting a conference leading 68
saves on the year.
Joseph Gannon of Amherst was named
NESCAC Rookie of the Year. Gannon scored nine goals and added nine
assists helping the Lord Jeffs reach the finals of the conference
tournament. This is the third year in a row that an Amherst
freshman has earned the award.
Bowdoin coach Brian Ainscough was
recognized by his peers as the NESCAC Coach of the Year.
Ainscough’s Polar Bears finished the year 10-3-2 and earned
the number one seed for the conference tournament.
