NESCAC Baseball All-Conference Teams Released
Callahan of Tufts Named NESCAC Player of the Year
HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior outfielder Dan Callahan of conference runner-up Tufts University was named the 2001 NESCAC Baseball Player of the Year. Callahan hit .433 in the regular season with 36 runs scored, 12 doubles, five home runs, and 38 runs batted in. He led the team with 55 hits and stole 10 bases.
Sophomore pitcher Jon Lee of Tufts was named the 2001 NESCAC Pitcher of the Year. He finished the regular season with a 6-1 record and a 1.86 earned run average. He yielded just 49 hits in 67 and two-thirds innings with 13 walks and 55 strikeouts. Williams first baseman Jabe Bergeron earned NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors and was named to the All-NESCAC first team. He completed the regular season of his rookie campaign with a .438 batting average, 10 doubles, six home runs, and 49 runs batted in. He scored 30 runs and recorded 57 hits. Williams head coach Dave Barnard earned NESCAC Coach of the Year honors for leading the Ephs to the conference title and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Four players who earned all-conference honors last year were named to the All-NESCAC first team this season. Senior catcher Tim Albrecht of the champion Ephs repeated as a first-team selection after hitting .400 with 10 doubles, six home runs, 34 runs scored, and 41 RBI. Juniors Andrew Freimuth of Trinity and Jon Lord of Colby also repeated as first-team honorees. Freimuth, a shortstop, led the Bantams to a berth in the NESCAC tournament by hitting .403 with 14 doubles, seven home runs, 35 runs scored, and 39 RBI. Lord, an outfielder, paced Colby with a .378 batting average, six home runs, 20 runs scored, and 23 runs batted in. Senior pitcher Jarrett Bayliss of Trinity earned first-team All-NESCAC honors after receiving second-team recognition a year ago. Bayliss posted a 6-3 regular season mark with six complete games, two saves and a 1.90 earned run average. He struck out 66 hitters in 66 and one-third innings, and yielded just 49 hits.
Three other players from Williams were named to the All-NESCAC first team. Senior pitcher Joe Steinberg recorded a 5-1 regular season mark with two saves and 1.77 earned run average. He fanned 72 hitters in 56 innings while giving up just 47 hits. Senior outfielder Lexi Evriviades batted .400 with nine doubles, 32 runs scored, and 27 runs batted in to earn first-team honors. Sophomore third baseman Austin Lehn garnered first-team accolades after hitting .425 with a team-high 44 runs scored and 27 runs batted in.
Rounding out the all-conference first team was senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh of Amherst. He hit a conference-best .450 during the regular season and hit safely in all but one game. He finished with 13 doubles, six home runs, 25 runs scored, and 26 RBI.
