Bonney of Middlebury Named Player of the Year

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore striker Meg Bonney of Middlebury was named the 2000 NESCAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Year. Bonney, the 1999 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, led the conference in scoring with 13 goals and 30 points in leading the Panthers to the conference championship.

Bonney was one of four players to earn first-team honors for the second consecutive year. Junior back Ellie Wendell and junior goalkeeper Ali Connolly were each named to the first team in their sophomore seasons. Wendell played outside or center back for the Panther defense that ranked among the nation’s leaders. Connolly posted the lowest goals against average in the NESCAC. Senior midfielder Allison Farmer of Bowdoin earned first-team accolades for the second consecutive year, starting every game at defensive midfield.

Five other players named to the first team this season were second-team honorees a year ago. Senior back Amanda Fiedler of Middlebury was the team’s captain and consistent center back. Abby Lockwood of Bowdoin, also a senior back, joined Fielder on the second team last year and the first team this season. Senior midfielder Sara Yeatman led Tufts with 10 goals, including five game-winners, to earn first team honors. Junior midfielder Cathy Poor earned a spot on the first team as the leading scorer for Amherst despite being limited by an injury. Sophomore forward Christine O’Donnell received first-team recognition after leading Colby with 11 goals, including four game-winners.

Rounding out the first team were sophomore forward Stacey Starner of Williams and senior back Sarah Lovitz of Colby. Starner led the Ephs with eight goals and six assists for 22 points. Lovitz, a two-time All-New England selection, anchored the Colby defense.

Freshman forward Jess Trombly of Tufts, a second-team All-NESCAC performer this year, was named 2000 NESCAC Rookie of the Year. She scored four goals and assisted on three others. Third-year Middlebury head coach Diane Boettcher was named 2000 NESCAC Coach of the Year.
