WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - No. 6 Williams defeated Cal Lutheran, 4-0, in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at Cole Field on Saturday.
Williams (19-1-1) started the scoring in the 15th minute when tri-captain defender Jacqueline Simeone lofted a corner kick toward the back post. Defender Liz Webber rose above a crowd of player to head the ball into the net and give the Ephs a 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran (16-4-3) held strong defensively for the remainder of the period, despite Williams' 17-1 advantage in shots, and trailed 1-0 at the break.
In the opening minutes of the second half, forward Alison Lu doubled the the Ephs' advantage. Lu won the ball in the penalty area and slotted her shot past the keeper.
The Ephs went up 3-0 in the 62nd minute when forward Kristina Alvarado's shot deflected into the net off a Regal defender.
Forward Natasha Albaneze pushed Williams' lead to 4-0 in the 68th minute. Defender Sarah Kelly sent a cross in from the left wing, and Alvarado headed it on to Albaneze, who tapped the ball into the net.
Cal Lutheran had its best chance of the day in the 82nd minute. Forward Bri Pinal streaked down the right side, got past a defender and sent a sharp-angle attempt toward the net. Williams goalkeeper Olivia Barnhill, however, deflected the shot out for a corner. Pinal sent a cross in from the set piece, but Barnhill made the stop.
Williams finished the game with a 25-10 shot advantage. Gabby Flores made six saves for the Regals, while Barnhill had two for the Ephs.
Williams faced the winner of No. 11 Johns Hopkins and No. 12 SUNY-Geneseo on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cole Field for a spot in the national semifinal.
