HADLEY, Mass. – The New England Small College Athletic Conference announced the 2017 Men’s and Women’s Rowing All-Conference Teams. The 10-member squads are comprised of individuals from the eight league teams based on each team’s finish at the NESCAC championships, which are held in conjunction with the National Invitational Rowing Championship.
The Bates men’s rowing team placed four individuals on the All-NESCAC First Team, with seniors Erik Divan (Riverhead, N.Y.), William Lehrer (Winchester, Mass.), Benjamin Whitehead (coxswain) (Shaker Heights, Ohio), and junior Roderick Pratt (Arlington, Mass.) and all receiving recognition. Divan moves up to the First Team after being an All-NESCAC Second Team selection last season. Williams placed three individuals on the First Team, with seniors Graham Buchan (Toronto, Ontario), Michael Polson (Chicago, Ill.) and Charlie Sheils (Rochester, N.Y.) garnering accolades. Buchan earns his third straight All-NESCAC First Team honor, while Polson was named to the team for the second consecutive year. Tufts seniors Zach Merchant (Lebanon, Pa.) and Tyler McCullough (Kapaau, Hawaii) represented the Jumbos on the First Team, earning the accolade for the first time in their careers. Wesleyan senior Mike Queenan (Weston, Mass.) collected his third All-NESCAC honor to round out the First Team. He also earned First Team honors in 2016 and was a Second Team selection in 2015.
On the women’s side, Bates senior Katherine Traquina (coxswain) (Wayland, Mass.) garnered her third All-NESCAC honor of her career. A former Second Team selection, Traquina earns First Team honors for the second time in her career. Senior Molly Pritz (Ithaca, N.Y.) and juniors Rosemary Kyne (Nashville, Tenn.) and Olivia Stockly (Cumberland Center, Maine) joined Traquina on the All-NESCAC First Team. Williams was represented by senior Gabrielle Markel (Girdwood, Alaska), a two-time All-NESCAC honoree, junior Clara Beery (Berkeley, Calif.) and sophomore Eileen Russell (New York, New York). The remaining members of the All-NESCAC First Team included Tufts juniors Sera Busse (Oakland, Calif.) and Emma Conroy (Wayland, Mass.) and Wesleyan senior Ava Miller-Lewis (Albany, Calif.).
Bates’ Peter Steenstra was selected as the 2017 NESCAC Men’s & Women’s Rowing Coach of the Year by his colleagues after guiding both squads to a sweep of the NESCAC Championships.The women’s team won its third NESCAC Championship in four years and the men’s squad captured its second championship overall. Steenstra earned the women’s Coach of the Year honor for the fifth time and was named the men’s Coach of the Year for the third time in his nine-year career at Bates. He previously was recognized as the NESCAC Women’s Rowing Coach of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and garnered the men’s Coach of the Year honor in 2012 and 2015.
The Bates women’s rowing team will be in pursuit of its second national title May 26-27 at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Joining Bates from the NESCAC at the NCAA Championship will be Wesleyan and Williams.
